Whoever said ‘ You can’t have it all’ has obviously never been to the Costa del Sol. This sunny region – which gets 320-odd days a year offers so much for all ages that it has surely got to be one of the best holiday destinations.

Our family have owned this fabulous, family Villa for over 40 years and we have had numerous, very happy holidays here. It is in a small area of privately-owned, exclusive villas called El Saladillo which is between Estepona and Marbella (Marbella is 16 km to the east and Estepona is 9 km to the west.)  – an area now known as the New Golden Mile. We have just completed a full refurbishment, designing it to ensure it offers everything to make your holiday relaxing and memorable.

The villa is set in 1000 square meters of lawns, shrubs and flowers and its walled and gated garden is completely safe for children. The large (10m X 5m), new pool can be heated to provide comfortable, all-year-round swimming. It has roman steps at one end and a diving board at the other. The pool is surrounded by a large garden with mature trees and we hope the Jersey Lillies will survive their transplant following the renovations and flower through the summer. There are plenty of sun loungers for relaxing and a patio table for ‘al fresco’ dining.

Fishermen on El Saladillo Beach – Gibraltar in the distance The short walk to El Saladillo Beach

The lovely El Saladillo beach and the Mediterranean is only a quiet, 2 minute walk from the Villa. There are friendly cafes on the beach and restaurants too, within easy walking distance along a lit promenade. There are also other restaurants located nearby which will satisfy all manner of budgets and cuisine.

A 24 hour garage at the entrance to El Saladillo, only 5 minutes walk, is always open should you run out of something. You can also buy supplies at a large supermarket across the footbridge over the main road which is about an 8 minute walk. The supermarket stocks Spanish, English and continental foods and drink and they will deliver to the Villa too. Hiring a car is not necessary as many amenities are a short walk away. At Pluma Piedra, all visitors, no matter what their age, can be independent and come and go as they please, without relying on a driver or a car. There is also a good, reliable bus service along the main road. 5 minutes walk to the bus stop and buses run every 20 minutes in either direction.

Should you want to explore, there is plenty to do nearby or further afield. Puerto Banus and Gibraltar (and the Apes!) and Dolphin and Whale watching are a short drive away along the coast. Fifteen minutes to the east is Marbella and Puerto Banus with The fabulous Corte Ingles – Selfridges of Spain! To the west is Tarifa – the windsurfing capital of the world and inland are the Sierras Bermajas with lovely wild flowers and rugged mountain scenery. You can take the train to Ronda, described by the BBC as one of the top 5 rail journeys in the world. This 1 hr 40 min trip is through the most spectacular scenery. Jerez (96km) and Seville (125km) are both delightful and can be done on a day visit.

Open-air markets such as the one held on a Saturday morning at the Bull Ring at Puerto Banus or down at Estepona Puerto on a Sunday morning are well worth a visit. Easter Parades, wine festivals and travelling fiestas all add to the holiday atmosphere. Places like Ronda and Mijas welcome visitors and are proud to show off their towns.

If you are looking for local nightlife then there are some great places to meet young people and new friends. Teenagers staying have found the ’90 Miles’ at ‘Villa Cana’ a great place to meet English speaking friends. It seems to be the ‘cool’ place to gather of an evening and it is within walking distance of the villa – either along the beach or along the main road.
